Tutankhamun took office of king at the age of eight. Amenhotep IV, or Akhenaton, was his father and it is thought that his father's sister was his mother (a very common occurrence in Ancient Egyptian times). Until the second year of his reign he kept his birth name, Tutankhaton. After that he changed his name of Tutankhamun which means 'living image of Amun'. During his reign many monumental structures were erected, restored and unfinished projects completed. For this reason the name of Tutankhamun is associated with perfection, harmony and beauty. After the king died, unexpectedly early, he was quickly buried in a non-royal grave in the Valley of the Kings. The historical importance of this 'boy king' is generally classified as slight. However it was the discovery of his burial tomb and contents by Howard Carter that brought his name to fame.
