The Lotus Flower is a living symbol for beauty and grace. Since the plants have the characteristic of drawing their flowers deep back into the water at night and letting them appear again at daybreak they were associated with the sun breaking forth from the night. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead the sun god Ra is 'the youth who came forth from the Lotus'. This plant represents a connection between the divine light and chaotic darkness. For this reason it is a sign of hope and rebirth. The flowers of the sacred blue lotus can be seen in many graves to delight the deceased with their fragrance. This plant is assigned to the god Nefertem.
The Royal Cartouche, or Royal Ring, symbolised the Cosmos 'that which encircles the sun'. The oval shape of the cartouche developed from the circular royal ring. It was better suited to accept numerous written signs. As magic amulets cartouches had the task of protecting the king. The sarcophagi of some rulers were given the shape of the royal ring in order to give expression to the world-dominating power of the pharaoh.
