Lapis Lazuli is known as 'the Stone of Protection'.
Since Horus was said to be the sky - he was considered to also contain the sun and moon. It became said that the sun was his right eye and the moon his left and that they traversed the sky when he, as a falcon, flew across it. After Osiris, his father was murdered by his uncle Set, Horus fought with him for the throne of Egypt. During this long and embittered battle (in which the gods had to intervene) Horus lost his left eye. However a new eye was created for him by part of Khonsu, the moon god, and was thus replaced.  This is why the moon is not as bright as the sun.
The Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection and known in th Egyptian language as 'Wedjat'. 'Wedjat' was a solar deity and this symbol began as an eye, an all seeing eye. 'Wedjat' was intended to protect the king in the afterlife and to ward off evil. The Eye of Horus is not only painted on boats but also on Egyptair aeroplanes for a safe journey.
