The Djed symbol is one of the more ancient symbols in Egyptian mythology. It represents stability and is associated with Ptah the Creator god and Osiris and is commonly understood to represent the Spine of Osiris.
There are many myths surrounding how Isis gathered up the body parts of Osiris. However in this myth Set tricked Osiris into a coffin which he had had made for him and which fitted exactly. Set then had the coffin with the now deceased Osiris flung into the Nile. It was carried downstream and across the ocean and landed in the city of Byblos in Syria where it ran aground. A sacred tree took root and rapidly grew around the coffin enclosing it within its trunk. The king of the land was astounded at its quick growth and ordered the tree to be cut down and installed within his palace. Isis searched for Osiris (in this instance said to be aided by Anubis) and found the location of the coffin. She ingratiated herself into the favour of the king and queen and was granted a boon. She asked for the pillar in the palace hall and being granted it extracted the coffin from the pillar. She then consecrated the pillar, anointing it with myrrh and wrapping it in linen. This pillar came to be known as the Pillar of Djed.
